Khordha–20/9-ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture (ICAR-CIWA), Bhubaneswar, has
established a Women-led Custom Hiring Centre on Processing and Value Addition of Horticultural Crops at Dhanahara village, Balipatna, Khordha, to promote value addition and agri-entrepreneurship. Earlier, under the project “Development of Horticulture-based
Chemical-free

Farming Model for Entrepreneurship and Strengthening Self-Reliance among Farm Women”, ICAR-CIWA formed the Jeevika Women Farmers’ Interest Group. With support from the Government’s SCSP sub-plan, the group was equipped with post- harvest machineries such as vegetable shredder, spice grinder, potato peeler, and heat sealing machine to set up a small processing unit-cum-Custom Hiring Centre.

The unit will produce quality value-added products like ground spices (chilli, coriander, turmeric, cumin, garam masala), generating additional income for members, while also serving as a training hub for other women’s groups.More than 50 farm women in the region are already benefitting from this initiative. To further strengthen skills, ICAR-CIWA organized a three-day training programme on “Processing and Value Addition of Horticultural
Crops” from 16-18 September 2025, coordinated by Dr. Ankita Sahu, Scientist, ICAR-
CIWA.The initiative is expected to enhance women’s income, build sustainablelivelihoods, and fosterwomen-ledagri-entrepreneurship in the rural ecosystem.
