KHORDHA, SEPTEMBER 23: The Khordha District Congress has begun preparations to strengthen its grassroots organisation ahead of the forthcoming municipal and panchayat elections, focusing on activating the party structure from the zonal level to panchayats and booths.The issue was discussed at an extended executive committee meeting held at Jayee Rajguru Town Hall here on Tuesday. All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and Odisha co-in-charge J.T. Kusum Kumar, the chief guest, urged party leaders and workers to remain connected with people throughout the year instead of becoming active only during elections.Mr. Kumar said the organisation’s functioning from the zone to the panchayat level would be reviewed regularly. The review would cover the performance of leaders and workers, their interaction with people and the reach of party programmes at the grassroots, he said. He also indicated that he would visit zones and panchayats, where necessary, to assess the organisation and interact with workers.
Emphasising discipline and unity, Mr. Kumar said action would be taken under party rules against leaders or workers who violated organisational discipline or acted against party decisions. He urged workers to ensure that differences over ticket distribution did not affect unity and said all leaders and workers should support officially selected candidates.
The meeting discussed unemployment, job opportunities for young people, the future of educated students and allegations of question-paper leaks in competitive examinations. Congress leaders alleged that these issues had caused concern among students and young people and criticised the government over them.
Rising prices also figured prominently. Party leaders alleged that the cost of essential commodities was straining household budgets and accused the government of failing to control the situation adequately.
Khordha District Congress president Rajib Pattnaik raised issues concerning amendments to the MMDR Act and alleged shortcomings in textbooks. Criticising both the Central and State governments, he said the party would intensify its agitation on matters of public interest.
Leaders discussed measures to expand the party’s grassroots presence, improve coordination among workers and address organisational problems in different parts of the district. They also reviewed the functioning of the organisation and workers’ responsibilities in taking party activities to the people.
Former minister Suresh Routray, former district president Janaki Ballabh Pattnaik, Prithvi Ballabh Pattnaik, Sonali Sahu, Pradeep Swain, Santosh Jena, Swagatika Pattnaik, Benu Bhoi, Lalatendu Satapathy, Satyajit Pattnaik, Ashok Mangaraj, Tapan Chakraborty, Shishir Parida, Sadashib Mahapatra, Ranjit Mahapatra, Jayshree Pattnaik, Nalini Behera, Amit Mahanty, Bibhanshu Pattnaik, Shishir Mahanty, Jayanta Das, Soumya Pattnaik and Soumya Baral were among those present.
All block Congress presidents, NAC presidents and district-level office-bearers also attended the meeting.
