Two Killed as Goods Truck Rams Trailer on NH-16

Tragic early-morning accident near Palatotapada Chhak; trailer flees spot, probe underway; heavy-vehicle parking and road safety come under scrutiny

KHORDHA, SEPTEMBER 20: Two persons were killed after a goods-laden truck rammed into the rear of a trailer on NH-16 near Palatotapada Chhak under Khordha Model police station in the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as the truck driver, Prasant (34), of Veppanathattai area in Perambalur district of Tamil Nadu, and his helper, A. Dhanasheelan (25), of Thenkumarai area in Salem district.
According to preliminary information, the truck was travelling behind the trailer when it collided with its rear portion with considerable force. The impact left the front portion of the truck badly damaged, trapping the driver and helper inside the mangled vehicle.

On being informed, personnel from Khordha Sadar police station and the Fire Services department reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. The two victims were extricated from the damaged vehicle and rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital at Khordha, where doctors declared them dead. Police subsequently recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. The damaged truck has also reportedly been seized as part of the investigation.
A significant aspect of the incident is that the trailer which was allegedly hit from behind was not found at the accident spot after the collision. Police are now trying to establish the identity and whereabouts of the trailer and its driver.
The circumstances under which the trailer left the spot and whether it was moving or stationary at the time of the collision are among the issues expected to be examined during the investigation. The registration number of the trailer, its route and movements and the identity of its driver could provide crucial evidence in reconstructing the sequence of events.
Police have begun an investigation and efforts are reportedly underway to trace the trailer. While the preliminary account suggests that the goods truck hit the trailer from behind, the exact circumstances leading to the accident are yet to be established.
Police are expected to examine several factors, including the speed of the truck, the position and movement of the trailer, visibility conditions at the spot, road illumination and whether the trailer had the required rear safety lights, reflectors and warning markings.
The incident has also once again brought the issue of heavy-vehicle parking and road safety on NH-16 into focus. The Bhubaneswar-Chennai corridor witnesses substantial movement of goods vehicles throughout the day and night, and concerns have previously been raised over the parking of heavy vehicles along portions of the highway.
Questions have also been raised over night-time surveillance, speed regulation and enforcement of safety norms for heavy vehicles on the highway. However, whether any such factor contributed to the Palatotapada accident will become clear only after the police investigation is completed.
The deaths of the two workers from Tamil Nadu have caused anguish among their families. Their fatal journey on the busy national highway has once again highlighted the risks faced by truck drivers and helpers engaged in long-distance freight transportation.
The tracing of the trailer, identification of its driver, reconstruction of the accident and determination of the precise cause of the collision are now central to the investigation.
