Radhashtami Celebration Brings Devotion and Literary Heritage Together in Khordha ;

‘Goura Krishna Bhajan Shatak’ republished; new work on Sri Chaitanya’s Cuttack connection released

KHORDHA, SEPTEMBER 19: Sri Radhashtami was observed with religious devotion and literary fervour at Sri Chaitanya Vihar here, with the Sri Chaitanya Research Association organising a special programme that brought together traditional worship, devotional music and efforts to preserve Odisha’s spiritual and literary heritage.

The programme began with the ceremonial abhishekam of Sri Gour Jagannath Radha Pramod Bihari, followed by Radha Sahasranama recitation, kirtan, arati and circumambulation of the temple. Devotees and members of the association participated in the celebrations, which highlighted the spiritual significance of Sri Radha and the enduring influence of the Sri Chaitanya tradition.
The occasion assumed a special literary significance with the republication of ‘Goura Krishna Bhajan Shatak’, a devotional work authored by noted Khordha-based bhakta poet Gouracharan Adhikari. The work was republished by Pandit Dinabandhu Khadanga with the objective of bringing the poet’s devotional compositions to a wider readership and preserving an important part of the region’s religious and literary heritage.
Another significant feature of the programme was the unveiling and formal release of ‘Sri Gour Padankaputa Cuttack Nagar’, a publication brought out by the Sri Chaitanya Research Association. The book seeks to document and highlight the historical and spiritual association of Sri Chaitanya with Cuttack and the footprints of the Mahaprabhu’s tradition in the city.
Addressing the gathering, association president Janakiballav Pattnaik spoke on the philosophical and spiritual dimensions of Radha Tattva. He stressed the need to preserve Odisha’s devotional literature and make such works accessible to younger generations so that the State’s rich Bhakti literary tradition continues to receive attention.
The republication of Goura Krishna Bhajan Shatak was particularly significant as it provided an opportunity to revisit the contribution of Gouracharan Adhikari, whose devotional compositions are rooted in the religious and cultural traditions of Odisha. Through his bhajans, the poet expressed his devotion to Sri Chaitanya and Sri Krishna while portraying the spiritual dimensions associated with their divine leelas.
The organisers also attached special significance to the timing of the publication, as September 19 marks the birth anniversary of Gouracharan Adhikari. The republication of his work on the occasion was described as a tribute to his contribution to devotional literature.
The programme also brought into focus the close relationship between religious practice and literary expression in Odisha. The Bhakti movement has historically contributed to the development of devotional poetry, music and cultural practices across the State, with spiritual themes being conveyed to the wider public through accessible forms such as bhajans and kirtans.
The release of Sri Gour Padankaputa Cuttack Nagar alongside the republication of Goura Krishna Bhajan Shatak added a wider historical and literary dimension to the Radhashtami observance. Together, the two publications sought to connect devotional traditions with efforts to document and preserve the historical legacy associated with Sri Chaitanya.
Pandit Gopabandhu Panda, Bodhayan Maharaj, Ananta Hari Baba, journalist Abyakta Harihar Khadanga, Yudhisthir Chhualasingh and Trailokyanath Samantaray were among those present on the occasion.
Association secretary Srijaya Narayan Pattnaik coordinated the programme.
The gathering concluded with an emphasis on continuing efforts to document, republish and promote devotional literature and historical works associated with the Sri Chaitanya tradition, particularly those rooted in Odisha’s regional cultural heritage.
