Students showcase creativity through painting competition; five entries selected for State-level contest

KHORDHA, SEPTEMBER 18: Aiming to sensitise the younger generation about the importance of the ozone layer and the need for its protection, World Ozone Day was observed at Maharana Birabar Government High School at Chandaka in Khordha district.
The programme, organised on the school premises, focused on the significance of the ozone layer in protecting the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, environmental balance and the collective responsibility of citizens towards safeguarding the environment and climate.
Addressing the students, Headmaster Bibhu Prasad Senapati explained the formation and importance of the ozone layer and its close connection with human life. He emphasised that protecting the ozone layer should not be viewed merely as the responsibility of government agencies, but requires awareness, participation and cooperation from every section of society.
He urged the students to develop environmentally responsible habits from an early age and contribute towards nature conservation through their everyday actions. He said that awareness about environmental protection should begin at the school level so that responsible practices become an integral part of the younger generation’s lives.
The students were also apprised of global efforts being undertaken for the protection of the ozone layer. Discussions highlighted the need to reduce environmental pollution, conserve natural resources, protect greenery and adopt environment-friendly lifestyles as part of broader efforts to safeguard the planet.
Teachers interacted with the students on issues relating to ozone protection and environmental conservation. The students actively participated in the discussion, shared their views and raised questions concerning environmental protection. The interaction helped transform the observance from a routine.

A painting competition organised as part of the programme emerged as one of its major attractions. Students depicted themes related to ozone-layer protection, environmental conservation and the need to safeguard the Earth. Through colours and creative expressions, they conveyed messages on keeping the planet green, clean and free from pollution.
The paintings reflected the students’ understanding of environmental concerns and their creative interpretation of the need to protect the ozone layer. The activity provided them with an opportunity to combine creativity with environmental awareness.
Five of the best paintings from the competition were selected and forwarded for the State-level competition. The selection generated considerable enthusiasm among the students and encouraged them to explore environmental issues through creative expression. Teachers observed that such activities could contribute significantly to developing students’ knowledge, creativity and awareness of ecological concerns.
Teachers Mamata Sahu, Sabita Diptirekha Nayak, Tapaswini Behera, Priyanka Bhoi, Manasi Mallik, Bharati Das, Satyabhama Pothal, Salayak Nayak, Sagarika Panda, Deepa Nayak, Amruta Khuntia and Sagarika Behera, along with teacher Amiya Behera, were present during the programme.
Education staff Pratap Kumar Pattnaik and Prasanna Beura extended their cooperation in conducting the programme.
The observance concluded with an emphasis on the importance of sustained environmental awareness among students. The organisers stressed that protecting the ozone layer and ensuring a sustainable future for the planet require informed and responsible action, with schools playing an important role in nurturing environmental consciousness among the younger generation.
