Residents Seek Closure or Shifting of Liquor Shop Near Biju Patnaik College

KHORDHA SEPTEMBER 22: Residents of the Biju Patnaik College–Mayfair area in Jayadev Vihar, Bhubaneswar, have urged the authorities to take immediate steps for the closure or shifting of a newly opened liquor shop near Mayfair Road, citing concerns over public safety, law and order, and the welfare of students and local residents.
In a representation submitted to the authorities, the residents stated that the liquor shop is located within around 500 metres of Biju Patnaik College.

They said the locality is predominantly inhabited by senior citizens, retired government employees, professionals and other residents and has traditionally maintained a peaceful atmosphere.

The residents also pointed out that the area has several educational institutions and coaching centres, with a large number of students residing in the locality for their studies. They expressed concern that the presence of a liquor shop in such a neighbourhood could affect the peaceful environment and expose students and other residents to undesirable activities.
According to the representation, Mundasahi Basti, where a large number of daily-wage labourers and their families reside, is also located adjacent to the Mayfair area. The residents apprehended that the availability of liquor in the vicinity could contribute to social and financial problems among vulnerable families.
The petition further alleged that some people consume liquor in the open near the shop despite restrictions on public drinking. Such activities, the residents claimed, have caused nuisance and inconvenience to pedestrians using the footpath and created a sense of insecurity among nearby residents.

The residents also alleged that the liquor shop owner had placed liquor containers and other materials on government land, resulting in unauthorised encroachment. They urged the authorities to verify the allegation and take appropriate action if any violation is established.
The petitioners said the continued operation of the liquor outlet in a residential and educational locality could adversely affect the area’s social environment and sought intervention in the larger interest of public peace, safety and law and order.
Copies of the representation were forwarded to the Khurda Collector and District Magistrate, the Excise Superintendent, Bhubaneswar, the Chairman of the Durnity Sangharsh Manch and the Minister of Excise, Government of Odisha, seeking appropriate action.
The residents have requested the authorities to examine the matter and take necessary steps for closure or shifting of the liquor shop in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
